Dots and Boxes is a strategy game played on a grid of dots. Two players take turns drawing a single line between adjacent dots. Whoever completes the fourth side of a box claims it. When the grid is full, whoever owns more boxes wins. It is the kind of game everyone learned with a pen and paper in school — and one that, played carefully, has surprising depth.
The trick of Dots and Boxes is the chain. Once the grid fills up, any line you draw will eventually let your opponent complete a chain of boxes. The strategic skill is deciding when to give up a short chain to set up taking a longer one — a sacrifice play that takes practice to see clearly.

- Avoid the third side of a box. It hands your opponent the fourth.
- When forced to give boxes, give a short chain to take a long one later.
- Count squares and remaining moves. The endgame is calculation, not feel.
- On larger boards, the "double cross" sacrifice is often the only way to break a losing chain.
- Practise the small grids first. Tactics learned there scale to larger games.
